Being For the Benefit of Mr. K

And amazing night! A huge thank you to Duncan for putting it all together! xoxo

A packed, generous house at Glad Day Books made for a night of spirit lifting & reassurance for my friend Kyle Andrews & his dog Duke, after the destruction of their apartment by fire. Everyone was effected by this show of support by strangers for strangers, as it was the first time some of the performers had met Kyle, as well being the first time I’d met some of the performers.

I kept the talent lineup simple, even turning down some who had volunteered to perform. Too many performers makes for a less focused show, I thought. I’d rather four great songs by a great band than four great songs by four different performers. Plus less time getting people on & off stage.

All the performers respected my request not to do cover versions of Disco Inferno, Light my Fire, Burning Down The House, You Started a…

Hot damn, that was one fine Queer Slam!

life with more cowbell's avatarlife with more cowbell

Hot damn, that was one fine Queer Slam! I had the great honour – and pleasure – of being on the judging panel at last night’s Queer Slam at Supermarket. Hosted by hot damn slam poet Cathy Petch, with assistance from Brock Hessel, last night’s festivities included performances by Petch and Hessel, and fellow judges David Bateman and Duncan Armstrong, and a feature set from Regie Cabico – with sponsors Canadian Cancer Society, who reminded us to Get Screened, and LGBTOUT, who lead us in an acknowledgment of World AIDS Day, which was marked earlier this week on December 1. The fabulous Lizzie Violet and a trio of guys dubbed “The Cutie Patooties” rounded out the judging panel.

Sharply attired in a fedora and mustache, Petch (who also performs with Bateman and Cabico in The Dildettes) is an awesome fun host, cheeky…

Adventures in arts & culture in Nuit Blanche Toronto 2014

life with more cowbell's avatarlife with more cowbell

Arts adventures continued last night at Nuit Blanche Toronto 2014, as audiences roamed the night to view and engage with various arts and culture exhibits around the city.

A lot of the exhibits I saw (along with pals Lizzie Violet and Zoltan Hawryluk) were part of the Night Circus series. Here’s what we saw last night, followed by a slide show:

All Together Now – Group Exhibition @ Hart House. Video and live performance with choirs, featuring LGBTQ choir Singing Out, among others.

Queen’s Park was rockin’ with a cosplay rave vibe, with a DJ, fire juggling and eating, peeps in animal costumes and clowns. Dancing, music and a fun, energetic atmosphere.

8th Wonder – Michael Oatman and Brian Kane @ Union Station

A very cool interactive light box installation (will see if I can find title/artist).

Un/natural History: Drowning Captiva 2014 – George Bolster

The Melodious Malfeasance…

#NikBeat Into The Mystic

Beautiful tribute! Thank you Duncan.

topoet's avatarTOpoet

The ‘farewell’ to Nik Beat at St. John of Norway Church, fell on the first day of autumn. It was warm and sunny, almost as if Nik had arranged it himself, to give us a warm goodbye.

church01 that’s a diet coke beside Nik’s guitar

When the celebration ended with the Beatles ‘In My Life’ combined with a touch of ‘Hello Goodbye’ I have to admit I teared up a bit. Both lyrics sum up a full life. The event, to me, was more of a bon voyage party – Nik was an explorer of the mystic; whether that was through angels, poetry, or music he was always seeking. The opening verse from Van Morrison’s ‘Into The Mystic’ played in my mind: ‘We were born before the wind/ Also younger than the sun/ Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic/ Hark, now hear the sailors…

Teacups

AfternoonTeaWithNeighbors1
Teacups. I have a lot of them.  I tried to mentally count how many teacups and saucers I have and I am guessing I have somewhere around 50 or 60 sets.  My mother can attest to this. When I was a child/teenager, for every birthday, special occasion or holiday my grandma Betty would give me a set. I cherish them. They are each individual works of art. A reminder of a woman I truly loved and miss each day.

I don’t get enough occasions to use my teacups. I have often wanted to have a high tea so I can get all the ones I have out of the cupboard, dust them off and pour delicious Earl Grey into them.  Have everyone enjoy them.  I wish I had a fancy cabinet so I could display them all, but alas, being in an apartment, I don’t really have the room.  (A large number of the the tea cups are with my Mamasita and she has them displayed in her China cabinet.) Last night I was given an opportunity to use them.  Some friends joined in to watch the season premiere of Downtown Abbey and of course we needed to have afternoon tea to accompany the viewing.  As precious as they are, these beautiful pieces of bone-china need to be used more often than they have been, if for anything other than what they represent.

My teacups were given to me in love. As ways to celebrate.  Each teacup is individual, unique and beautiful.  They have their own stories and the stories of the person who made the cup.  A story that accompanies each use, by the person drinking from it. These teacups are used by people I love, all of them individual, unique and beautiful. The teacups represent love, friendship, life. All precious and something that can be broken at any time. Something we need to cherish, appreciate and never take for granted. This week has reminded me of all of these things.

As with teacups, love should not be hidden away in a cupboard.  Life should not collect dust. For every chance we don’t take, is a great moment lost in life. This year I have moved forward in my career as a writer, lost a fur baby, found love and lost a good friend. I consider myself lucky, loved and I will work hard to ensure I never take this for granted.

The loss of my friend has hit myself and many others hard.  He was 58.  An incredibly talented poet, visual artist, musician and radio host.  He was a peer, a hero and a champion of the arts.  He was loved by many and leaves a legacy. 58 is young, too young. Nik crammed a lot of life into those 58 years. Though some of it was hard, all of it was beautiful.  He represents someone who never kept the teacups in the cupboard.  They always out for all to see, many to enjoy.  They were always filled with love, conversation and creativity. A true inspiration on how life should be lived.  My teacups will no longer be hidden in the cupboard.

There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea. ~Henry James

Nicki Ward (nickiward.com) has ably stepped into the spotlight as the new hostess for Plasticine Poetry. Change is good & Plasticine, already a fine series, becomes better as a result. The addition of Poem From The Hat (PFhat) is a fun idea for the open stagers – instead of reading a piece of your own you pick one from the hat to for a cold read.

After a fine round of open-stagers (including myself) Kimberley Wilson (FaceBook) gave us a fun set. She clearly enjoys being on stage, had great chemistry with the audience but that didn’t detract at all from the work she read. Her short pieces dealing with relationships, food & travel were filled with playful, easy to savour images & emotions: ‘our voices float up to meet the light,’ ‘blood on snow with gravy,’ ‘let you smell the ocean in…

Noir leaves us lipstick smudged

Amazing review!

topoet's avatarTOpoet

Lizzie Violet’s Cabaret Noir continues to run the bar staff at The Central ragged – even on a hot August night the space is crammed beyond capacity and with an audience reluctant to leave when the show is over.

snake this really makes want to get my hair done here

After a quick round of open stagers (including myself plugging Pinebow) spoken feature Heather Babcock read several emotional pieces. Her new short story ‘The Dancing Bear’ was full of sensory detail: ‘the sidewalk grey box of my apartment,’ ‘had a shot of whisky as I ordered another beer,’ ‘lipstick smudged straw of her vodka cranberry’ as well as clear emotions ‘it’s as if I’d stolen all of tomorrow’s pain.’ Sexually explicit as well the temperature rose as she read.
